Longer Walks Round Northallerton
The aim of Northallerton Striders is to deliver healthy walks to people of all abilities in and around Northallerton area. We do this by leading and guiding walks and by encouraging people to get out and walk themselves.  In this section, we present a wide range of walks from 'health miles' (so you can check your progress) to five mile walks and longer, designed to get you out and walking.

We split walks into 1 and 2 heart and 3 and 4 heart walks which equate to about 30 minutes, 1 hour, 90 minutes and 2 hours respectively - or 2 Km (1 mile), 4Km (2.5 mile), 6Km and 7.5 Km (4.5 mile).  The 1 and 2 heart walks are offered by Hambleton Strollers. - Striders only do 3 and 4 heart walks.

Some of the walks are described here are for your information, but unless you are an experienced walker we would advise you to join either Strollers or Striders for accompanied planned walks as you will also benefit from being part of a friendly group.

Not really a 2 heart walk although it's only an hour, this route has stiles, a short but steep bank and plenty of gates. Combine with the Halikeld Bridge route to create a 4 heart walk.

Another of our original walks, this one was our Royal Wedding Walk in 2011.

Ellerbeck - Fox and Hounds - Northallerton

4.5
4 Hearts

Ellerton (Lakeside / Otterburn Mill)

Forum 90 minutes - North and South

3.7 miles
3 Hearts

Quite a long 90 minute walk, but no stiles and plenty of shortcuts, so go for it and simply cut a corner if you run out of time. Can also be walked from Stone Cross, which has free parking, or park outside the Standard and have a coffee there at the end.

Forum – Fox and Hounds via Turker Beck

2.1 miles
3 Hearts

The second shortest route from the Forum to the Fox and Hounds, we walked this in July 2011. Quite a steep grass slope makes this a short, sharp walk but the views are worth it.

Forum – Fox and Hounds – various routes

4 to 7 miles
4 Hearts

Various routes starting at the forum, going out to Stone Cross then up to the Fox and Hounds before returning via Scholla Lane or Dibdale Woods.

Walked on Good Friday 2012.

There is a stile-free option - this is on bridlepaths and roads, so it could be used as a Tramper route (although the short stretch through the wood is slightly overgrown) or cycled.

Fox and Hounds - Pill Rigg Farm

3.7 miles
4 Hearts

Fox and Hounds - Chester House - Pill Rigg Farm with optional return past Old Toms Barn.

Gormire Lake

4 miles
4 Hearts

A walk from Sutton Under Whitestonecliff to Gormire Lake and back via Carr Lane. Gormire Lake is at the bottom of Sutton Bank, but this approach avoids the worst of the hill (it still has about 300 foot of ascent).

Great Langton to Morton - Road Walk

4.2 miles
4 Hearts

Catch the bus to Great Langton, walk down the road to Morton, then catch the bus home. Apart from an optional visit to the local church, this route is entirely on quiet country roads so it is good for a winter walk.

3.3 miles
4 Hearts

Mainly road and field walking, this route crosses a very wet area - even in summer.

Green Hammerton

4.4 miles
4 Hearts

A walk mainly across fields, this route had a couple of obstacles when walked in May 2012 but was still an enjoyable walk.

Hackfall Woods

3.8 miles
4 Hearts

Hackfall Woods have a large number of permissive paths and interesting remains to explore. This route is an outline using public footpaths, but the area is worth exploring. There are a lot of steps and hills, and the ground is always wet and muddy in places, so be prepared.

Kirkby Fleetham, Kirkby Hall and Great Fencote

4 miles
4 Hearts

Walk log for our walk round Kirby Fleetham in November 2011 - a great walk apart from the horizontal hailstones in the last half mile!

Following an old railway and a couple of green lanes, this triangular route passes an abbey, a roman castle, and a very old river crossing.

Ripon Canal

2 hours
4 Hearts

The Striders walked this without me, so I need feedback to complete the guide!

Romanby - Golf Course - Ainderby Steeple

5.6 miles
4 Hearts

Longer version of the Golf Course circular, returns via Warlaby.

Scruton - Fencote Circular

A fairly flat walk, the outbound part is along a quiet country road and the return is across fields. Good pub at the end.

2.7 / 4.2 miles
3 / 4 Hearts

Two walks starting from the Sion Hill car park - or save half a mile by doing them together.

Stone Cross - Brompton - Strikes

3.4 miles
4 Hearts

A triangular route with one side across the fields. The return along the main road is a bit noisy but safe as the verge is wide.

Strikes 60 minute circular

2.4 miles
3 Hearts

This is only a 60 minute walk if the stiles are intact and if you have a small group. There are 12 stiles and possibly a herd of water buffalo to get past, so don't start this unless you have plenty of time.

Sutton Bank - White Horse - Circular

3.7 miles
4 Hearts

A flat walk with excellent views - or a steep descent with a hundred steps back up - the choice is yours!

This route needs rewriting to start and end at the Gliding Club - you can sit and eat a bacon butty while watching the gliders come and go!

Thornton le Beans - Sandy Bank - Knotto Bottom

3.5 miles
4 Hearts

This walk can be very muddy, and it includes an interesting stream crossing with a rope to pull yourself up the other side. Catch the bus out and walk back.

Thornton le Beans – Pillrigg Lane – Green Lane

3.8 miles
4 Hearts

A circular walk along the old Roman Road, which is now very quiet. It's hard to imagine a Roman legion marching along there!

Thornton le Moor - Purgatory

3.8 miles
4 Hearts

Basic route is stile-free, but there is an option for going over 3 stiles if you really want to.

Thornton le Moor South

3.1 miles
4 Hearts

Millennium walk, this is quite a short walk which has been extended up Endicote lane but still only just qualifies as 4 heart.

Thornton- le-Moor - Thornton House Circular

5.3 km
3.5 Hearts

One of our first walks, this is still a favourite. No real stiles, but the track is deeply rutted in places and can get very wet.

Mon Jun 4 2012
Thrintoft North

3.8 miles
4 Hearts

Walk round Thrintoft, designed for the Jubilee Barbecue so it's based on Jenny's house but can easily be based on the pub instead.

Thrintoft – Morton – Ainderby Steeple Circular

4.5 miles
4 Hearts

Walk from Thrintoft heading South to Morton then looping back through Ainderby Steeple and returning via the Equestrian Centre
